IFTA - International Fuel Tax Agreement

IFTA is an agreement among 48 United States and 10 Canadian Provinces to ensure that motor fuel use taxes for Qualified Motor Vehicles in more than one jurisdiction are accurately and efficiently apportioned to the jurisdiction in which the fuel is used.

A Qualified Motor Vehicle (QMV) is a motor vehicle used, designed, or maintained for the transportation of persons or property, with a power unit that

  • Has a gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms; or
  • Has three axles, regardless of weight; or
  • Has, when used in combination with a trailing unit, a combined weight that exceeds 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms.

IFTA registration and decal renewal can be done online through the Georgia Tax Center.

Georgia IFTA Decals

IFTA decals are $3.00 per set; you are required to have one set per qualified vehicle. One decal should be placed on each side of your truck.

Georgia IFTA Penalties

Failure to pay when the tax is due will result in a tax penalty of the greater of $50.00 or 10% of the net tax due. Assessment notices will be issued, and if the licensee does not agree with the Assessment notice they may file a Protest with the Department.

Quarterly Fuel Tax Report for No Operations:

State of Georgia requires you to submit IFTA Quarterly Fuel Tax Report even if no operations were conducted during the reporting period.
